How
did you do? Do you know why each doll is dressed differently in each time
period?
Before the Europeans arrived in North America, Haudenosaunee relied on animal
skins and furs for their clothing.
This is why
the girl from the period before the arrival of the Europeans is dressed all in
deerskin. After Europeans and Native Americans began to trade with each other,
the kind of clothing that Haudenosaunee wore changed. Haudenosaunee began
wearing clothes made from cotton and wool. Now their moccasins were decorated
with glass beads whereas before European contact, they used porcupine quills and
other natural materials for decoration. Today, a Haudenosaunee girl might dress
just like anyone else, but you may also see her dressed in the older style of
clothing. She might even wear a combination of the different types of
clothing shown here in new and inventive ways!
