The hardhat and Gustoweh symbolize Haudenosaunee men's roles in the past and in the present. The Gustoweh is a headdress worn by Haudenosaunee men on special occasions. It can be worn by a chief to meet dignitaries, by a faithkeeper in a longhouse ceremony, or by a dancer at a festival. Deer antlers are attached to both sides of a chief's Gustoweh. Many artists use the image to show pride in Haudenosaunee history and culture because it is such a distinctive style of hat. On all construction sites, men must wear hardhats for protection. |
