How
did you do? Do you know why each doll is dressed differently in each time
period?
Before the Europeans arrived
in North America, Haudenosaunee relied on animal skins and furs for their
clothing. This is why the boy from 1400 is dressed all in deerskin. After
Europeans and Native Americans began to trade, the kind of clothing that
Haudenosaunee wore changed. Haudenosaunee began wearing clothes made from cotton
and wool. Their moccasins were decorated with glass beads where before European
contact they used porcupine quills and other natural materials for decoration.
Today a Haudenosaunee boy would dress just like anyone else, but you may also
see him dressed in the older style of clothing or a mixture of all of the
styles. He might even combine the different clothing pieces shown here to
create his own personal style!
