IROQUOIS INDIAN MUSEUM

HOME

The Iroquois Indian Museum is a truly unique cultural destination, strategically located just minutes from Howe Caverns.   Our mission is to educate the public about Iroquois art, culture, and history. The Iroquois are those Native American people belonging to one or more of the Six Nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. Exhibits of both traditional and experimental Iroquois arts and historical and archeological collections, an inter-active hands-on Children's Iroquois Museum, a wide range of programs, tours, and special events, many of which can be geared to a group's specific needs, and a 45-acre Nature Park with three hiking trails, are all a part of the Museum's offerings. The Museum building is a work of art in itself, designed in the shape and spirit of the old longhouses that once graced the valleys of upstate New York, but constructed as a fully modern building.

ANNUAL EVENTS INCLUDE:

Two Iroquois festivals (Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend) feature Iroquois social dancing, storytelling,  Iroquois foods,  an all Iroquois art market featuring many of the premier Iroquois artists and craftspeople working today, children's activities, nature park walks, and much, much more!! Bring your archeological finds for identification by the Museum's Archeology Department, talk with our genealogy expert for advice on finding your Native American roots, see the newest exhibits in the Museum, see old friends and meet new ones at this fun filled weekend of art, education, and culture!

Mission Statement:

The IROQUOIS INDIAN MUSEUM is an educational institution dedicated to fostering understanding of Iroquois culture using Iroquois art as a window to that culture.  The museum is a venue for promoting Iroquois art and artists, and a meeting place for all peoples to celebrate Iroquois culture and diversity.  As an anthropological institution, it is informed by research on archaeology, history, and the common creative spirit of modern artists and craftspeople.

Vision Statement:

Inspired by the image of an Iroquois longhouse in the clearing, the Iroquois Indian Museum is actively connected with all Iroquois communities and celebrates the cultural diversity, rich history, archaeology, and artistic expression of the Iroquois—Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora.

It seeks to be a premier resource center on Iroquois arts, culture, and history; to house and exhibit the most comprehensive collection of Iroquois arts; and to be a setting where Iroquois and non-Iroquois can come together and explore the richness of Iroquois culture.
