Babe and Carla Hemlock :Excellance in Iroquois Arts Award Exhibition. DVD Catalog. Initiated in 1984 the Award recognizes Haudenosaunee artists who have maintained consistently high quality expression throughout their careers and raised awareness of Haudenosaunee art and presence on a national and international scale. Donald “Babe” Hemlock and Carla Hemlock, Kanien’keha:ka (Mohawk) from Kahnawake, were the recipients in 2017. The catalogue includes interviews with both artists and features the work in the exhibition. Babe Hemlock is acknowledged as a foremost cradleboard carver and painter and Carla is highly respected for her art quilts and textile-based commentary. Both have achieved exceptional recognition for their distinctive works both individually and as collaborators. The Hemlock’s work was featured in Changing Hands 3: Art Beyond Reservations at the Museum of Art and Design in NY; On the Trails of the Iroquois in Germany; and Native Fashion Now, organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and currently touring. Their works are in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, DC., Ganondagan Historic Site, and other private and public collections.
