Dave Farnham, Onondaga, Beaver Clan
Buffalo Scapula, Height 8 1/2 inches, Length 14 inches
On the small end of the scapula, is carved an image of a bear face with ears.
Sculptor and carver Dave Farnham was born on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada. Although surrounded by art he did not begin creating his own work until he was 50. Soapstone became his material of choice. Due to the physical demands of sculpting Dave developed carpal tunnel syndrome in 2011. Using traditional Native practices he healed himself without the need for surgery. While recovering a friend gave him a set of moose antlers and suggested he carve some eagles. Today he is one a small number of Iroquois who work in the challenging media of antler and bone.
