Larry Bomberry, Onondaga Nation, Wolf Clan

Larry was born at Six Nations Reserve. He moved to Buffalo when he was 17. There he met and married Barbara Hill of the Mohawk Turtle Clan. Larry and his wife returned to Six Nations, where they raised a family of five. It was during this time period that Larry began his artistic practice.

To improve his employment chances, he went to welding school in Hamilton and worked in a small shop to gain experience. Eventually he joined the Kohering Machine Company, and worked there until 1989, when he injured his back on an oil spill. To survive and to support his large family, he turned to soapstone carving. He likes to carve pieces that have a story connected with them, sometimes from traditional Iroquois legends. He seeks to sell to the common man, and for that reason seldom makes large carvings.
